  • MP govt moves to regulate poultry farms, cut down antibiotics

  • The MP government is framing a Poultry Farming Act — said to be first in the country — to regulate the industry. It will cover everything, from permission to open a farm to mandatory safety and hygiene standards.
  • In the absence of any law so far, there is absolutely no regulation of poultry farming. Anyone can open a poultry farm with permission from gram panchayat or the local civic body.

  • The proposed law will bring existing farms in its ambit. These and the new ones will have to adhere to strict safety and hygiene standards. Veterinarians will check chicken feed and hygiene, and prevent unbridled use of antibiotics. Many farms use antibiotics and other chemicals — that are harmful to humans — to speed up growth of chicken.
