Senior citizen discount — a first in India — gets rolling in MP

The “senior citizen discount policy” — the first such in the country — has been rolled out in the New Year. Over 400 establishments across Madhya Pradesh have started offering 5%-25% discounts to the elderly on a voluntary basis.

The MP government’s happiness department website has listed out cities and sectors where senior citizens can avail of the benefit. It has details of establishments, their contact numbers and the percentage of discount each offers for various services.

The happiness department has an army of 50,000 volunteers, known as Anandaks, to go around commercial establishments and encourage owners to offer discounts to the elderly. Establishments that agree to this give a declaration on the portal, after which officials verify its details. Once the verification is cleared, its details appear on the website for beneficiaries to access.
