  • Madhya Pradesh, Centre lock horns over zoo in BJP minister’s constituency

  • Amid an on-going tussle to get Gir lions, Madhya Pradesh government is again at loggerheads with the Centre.
  • This time, it’s over the establishment of state forest minister Gauri Shankar Shejwar’s ambitious zoo-cum-rescue centre within the forest land in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • While the MP government has said that the establishment of zoo doesn’t require clearance from the forest department under the provisions of Forest Clearance Act 1980 (FCA), the Centre says it does.

  • The MP government had proposed five zoo-cum-rescue-centres following recommendations from ministers in 2015. Shejwar wanted one in his constituency. While Union forest ministry is emphasizing getting a ‘forest clearance’ (FC) before the execution of the project, the MP government says it’s not necessary for a zoo.
