MADHYA PRADESH

  • Madhya Pradesh to have two onion storage units

National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) is developing 11,000 mt storage space for onions in Madhya Pradesh to keep a lid on prices.

The storage facilities are likely to be operational by next season and will facilitate local procurement and supply of onions by NAFED.

Madhya Pradesh is a leading producer of onions with Indore division producing an average of over 4 lakh tonne but the state lacks basic infrastructure required for storing onions and most produce is stored at farms in temporary arrangements.
The facilities are being constructed by NAFED at two places – Ashta in Sehore district and Ujjain.

The storage space is estimated to cost around Rs 11 crore (for both sites) and an additional around Rs 8 crore will be spent on developing basic infrastructure like road, weighing machines, electricity and other amenities.

The facility is being created by NAFED while state horticulture department has sanctioned the funds.
